Justice Dept. files suit against Fiat Chrysler, alleging use of emission bypass software - 5/23/2017 1:54 PM
Fiat Chrysler is accused of using software to bypass emissions controls on diesel vehicles sold in the US, according to a civil suit filed by the Department of Justice. The suit alleges Fiat Chrysler deployed undeclared "defeat devices” in 2014-2016 Fiat Chrysler diesel vehicles. The firm was notified in January of the situation and is working on updated software that it believes will resolve government concerns. The firm has applied for certification from US and California regulators to sell 2017 diesel models in the US market and was in talks to win approval for the software update relative to vehicles on the road.
US firms work with Japan to boost missile defense capabilities - 5/23/2017 10:23 AM
US firms are working with Japanese partners on new projects to develop technologies that will enhance Japan's shield against a North Korean missile strike. Raytheon is allied with Mitsubishi Electric on the project, while Lockheed Martin is working with Fujitsu. The intent is to extend the range of Japan's detection and targeting radar.
China's imports of North Korean goods fell - 5/23/2017 10:23 AM
China's imports of North Korean goods fell below $100 million to new multi-year lows in April, accelerating a decline after Beijing halted coal shipments from its isolated neighbor. "We urge North Korea to not do anything to again violate UN Security Council resolutions," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi declared. "At the same time, we hope all parties can maintain restraint."
Terror attack in Manchester, England - 5/23/2017 10:23 AM
At least 22 people were killed and 59 wounded in an explosion at the end of an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. Greater Manchester Police said they believe the attack was carried out by one man who died in the explosion.  "We are working to establish the full details of what is being treated by the police as an appalling terrorist attack," UK Prime Minister Theresa May said in a statement.  Britain's political parties have agreed to suspend election campaigning until further notice. While traveling in Bethlehem today, President Donald Trump condemned the deadly terrorist blast, calling terrorists who carry out such attacks "evil losers."
Consumer groups allege FDA dodging food safety duty - 5/23/2017 9:39 AM
Several consumer, health and food safety groups on Monday hit the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with a suit in New York federal court accusing it of shirking its responsibility for food safety by allowing food manufacturers to self-certify that certain additives are safe for consumption. The Center for Food Safety, Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, Center for Science in the Public Interest, Environmental Defense Fund, the Environmental Working Group and Earthjustice argue that FDA's GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) rule, finalized in 2016, falls short of consumer expectations and runs afoul of Congress' intent.
Brazil’s Unica expects drop in sugar shipments to China on import duties - 5/23/2017 9:23 AM
Shipments of Brazilian sugar to China are expected to decline 800,000 tonnes the next 12 months in the wake of China imposing import duties on sugar imports, according to the Brazilian sugar industry group Unica. "We did an initial evaluation of the impact of the measures and we project a 28 percent fall in China's total sugar imports," Unica's Eduardo Leão said in a conference call with reporters. The group expects the Brazilian government will discuss the measures in talks with the Chinese government in coming weeks, Leão noted, adding the country could seek a WTO complaint if those talks are not satisfactory. China allows 1.94 million tonnes of sugar imports with a 15 percent tariff and applies a 50 percent duty on shipments above that level. The import duties will add another 45 percent duty on the above-quota imports, taking the total to 95 percent this year.

Chicago Fed index rises - 5/22/2017 2:43 PM
The gauge of US economic activity from the Chicago Fed rose to its highest mark since 2014, with gains in two of the four indicators rising in April compared to March. The reading was at 0.49 in April, the highest since 0.50 in November 2014 and sharply higher than the 0.07 mark from March. "Two of the four broad categories of indicators that make up the index increased from March, and only one category made a negative contribution to the index in April," the Chicago Fed said in a statement.
Traders expect smaller beef, larger pork stocks vs month-ago: Reuters - 5/22/2017 1:24 PM
Traders expect April 30 total frozen beef stocks to be 444.4 million pounds and pork stocks at 586.4 million pounds in the Cold Storage report from USDA, according to a poll of traders released by Reuters. That compares to March 31 supplies of 464 million pounds for beef and 555 million pounds for pork. The expectation for higher pork stocks may be somewhat surprising given market views that demand has remained strong on both the domestic and export front.
